Record Passenger Traffic Marks 66.8 Million

Finally, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport hosted 66,800,000 passengers in the year 2024 making an index of 8% higher than the previous year. However, these numbers still continue to be far from the level of the year 2019, which amounted to 71.7 million passengers served by the airport.

Flight Operations Grow by 7%

The airport traffic showed almost 473948 flight operations, 7% more than in the previous year. However, operations were limited to 483,000 flights with the intention of reducing pressure in the peak flying time. This capacity limit is planned to be further decreased in 2025 with the new regulation of annual 478,000 flights initiated by the government to fight noise nuisance.

European and Long-haul Destination

The connectivity of Schiphol consisted of 301 direct destinations of which 124 were intercontinental. Outbound tourism air passengers were as follows; Europe 45.3 million, long haul 21.5 million. The top choice holiday destinations were the UK, Spain, Italy, USA and Turkey.

Connectivity Rankings

Schiphol remained one of the most interconnected airports. This put it at number two in Europe, and at number five in the world according to the ACI Airport Industry Connectivity Report 2024. It also had the highest number of immediate European links among similar airports.

Comparison Study with the London Heathrow Airport

However, Schiphol achieved growth because London Heathrow with a record of 83.9 million passengers in the year 2024 surpassed its numbers during the COVID-19 period. This only showed the variation in the recovery rate between the two main centers.

Upcoming Retail Revamp

Schiphol’s duty-free business will be operated by Lagardère Travel Retail beginning in May 2025. This contract covers more than twenty stores, where various groups of products like perfumes and cosmetics, sunglasses, liquor and tobaccos, confectionery, etc are combined. The move sits well with Schiphol’s long-term objectives of improving passenger satisfaction and expanding its services portfolio.
