Authorities are investigating the death of a woman who was found with apparent self-inflicted stab wounds inside a restroom at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport early Thursday morning.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said the incident happened at about 5 a.m. on October 1 after a MARTA Police Department detective encountered the woman walking through the airport and noticed that she appeared to be in distress.
What Happened
- ~5:00 a.m.The detective approached the woman and offered assistance in getting her home, according to the GBI. She declined the offer but said she needed an ambulance. The detective then requested emergency medical assistance.
- Shortly afterThe woman subsequently told the detective that she needed to use a restroom. She was directed to a nearby restroom while the detective remained outside.
- Minutes laterA short time later, another person alerted the detective and asked for help. The detective entered the restroom and found the woman suffering from multiple apparent self-inflicted stab wounds. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Medical Examiner Review
Her body was transported to the Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy is expected to determine the official cause and manner of death.
The woman's identity has not been publicly released. Authorities have also not disclosed what may have led to her distress before the incident.
GBI Investigation
The Atlanta Police Department requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation conduct the investigation. The GBI said the case remains active and ongoing.
The investigation comes as authorities continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the woman's death and whether any additional factors contributed to the incident.
