Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) is one of southern China's major aviation hubs, serving Guangzhou and the wider Pearl River Delta region. Located north of central Guangzhou, the airport provides access to the city through metro services, taxis, ride-hailing vehicles, private transfers, airport shuttle buses and intercity rail connections.

Door-to-Door Comfort

Direct private transfers and taxis straight to your hotel or destination in Tianhe and Yuexiu.

Traffic-Free Metro

Line 3 and intercity rail connections bypass heavy motorway congestion during rush hours.

24/7 Operations

Round-the-clock options, including inter-terminal shuttles and late-night express buses.

The most suitable transport option depends on your arrival terminal, final destination, luggage, time of day and whether you prioritize speed, convenience or ease of navigation.

Important Infrastructure Update

Terminal 3 opened in October 2025, and airline operations previously based at Terminal 1 were transferred to Terminal 3 by May 2026. Verify your departure or arrival terminal before choosing a route.

1. Private Airport Transfers: The Most Convenient Door-to-Door Option

A pre-arranged private transfer is a practical choice if you want to reach your hotel, business meeting or other destination without navigating public transport. It is particularly useful for families, passengers with a lot of luggage, business travelers and visitors unfamiliar with Guangzhou.

How It Works

A driver meets you at an agreed airport pickup point and takes you directly to your destination. Depending on the service, the driver may monitor your flight, wait for delays, help with luggage and provide communication support.

Travel Time and Considerations

Travel to central districts such as Tianhe and Yuexiu typically takes around 40–70 minutes in favourable traffic. Private transfers avoid train changes and carrying luggage, though rush-hour congestion can affect timing.

Best suited for: Travelers who prioritize comfort, direct transport, luggage assistance or a straightforward journey after a long flight. Before arrival, confirm your terminal, pickup location, waiting arrangements, destination address in Chinese and contact details.

2. Guangzhou Metro: The Most Reliable Option During Traffic Congestion

The metro is often the most predictable way to travel between Baiyun Airport and central Guangzhou, especially during weekday rush hours. It is largely unaffected by motorway congestion and connects with major commercial districts, railway stations and other metro lines. However, the route depends on which terminal you are using.

From Terminal 2 Direct Metro

Connected directly to Airport North Station (机场北站) on Metro Line 3.

Key destinations:

  • Jiahewanggang: interchange for other Guangzhou lines.
  • Tiyu Xilu: commercial hub in Tianhe (35–40 mins).
  • Guangzhou East Station: onward rail connections.
  • Zhujiang New Town: central business district, via transfer.
From Terminal 3 Shuttle / Rail Link

Terminal 3 does not have a direct indoor metro link. Choose one of two approaches:

Option A (Shuttle): Metro Line 3 or 9 to Gaozeng Station (Exit B), then a 15-minute airport shuttle to T3.

Option B (Intercity Rail): Metro to Airport North Station (T2), then an intercity train to Baiyun Airport East Station (T3).

3. Taxis and Ride-Hailing: Flexible Transport Without Pre-Booking

Taxis and app-booked vehicles offer direct transport to destinations that are inconvenient to reach by rail, with no advance booking required.

Official Airport Taxis

Depart from designated ranks (for example, Terminal 3 Gates 72 and 75, or the Terminal 2 Transportation Hub). The ride to central Guangzhou takes 45–70 minutes.

  • Make sure the driver uses the meter and confirm any toll charges.
  • Have your destination written in Chinese characters.

App-Based Ride-Hailing

Ideal if you want digital booking confirmation. Vehicles collect passengers from designated parking areas (for example, the Terminal 3 P12 parking structure).

  • Set up payment and mobile connectivity beforehand.
  • Follow the in-app pickup instructions closely.

4. Intercity Rail: An Efficient Choice Beyond Central Guangzhou

Intercity rail is an efficient alternative for reaching wider parts of the Guangzhou metropolitan area and regional hubs.

Baiyun Airport East Station (Terminal 3)

Integrated into T3's transportation centre, with fast links across Guangzhou (for example, around 24 minutes to Keyun Road) and onward connections to Guangzhou South.

Baiyun Airport North Station (Terminal 2)

Serves Terminal 2, letting you transfer seamlessly between intercity trains and Metro Line 3 depending on your final destination.

5. Airport Express Buses: Useful for Direct Routes and Late-Night Arrivals

Express coaches link Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 with key city hubs, including Guangzhou Railway Station, Tianhe commercial areas, Haizhu District and regional cities. Journey times range from 50 to 90 minutes. Selected routes run overnight, making them a useful fallback when the metro is closed.

6. Travelling Between Terminals

A free 24/7 inter-terminal shuttle links Terminals 1, 2 and 3, and intercity rail also connects the terminal complexes. Always check the departure terminal on your boarding pass and leave plenty of time for security and transfers.

7. Which Transport Option Is Best for Your Journey?

Travel Requirement Most Suitable Option
Avoiding road congestion Metro or intercity rail (depending on terminal)
Direct transport to a hotel Private transfer, taxi or ride-hailing
Travelling to a destination near a metro station Guangzhou Metro
Reaching regional destinations Intercity train
Travelling to coach-served locations Airport express bus
Arriving late at night Taxi, ride-hailing, pre-arranged transfer or overnight bus
Travelling with several large suitcases Private transfer or taxi
Moving between airport terminals Free inter-terminal shuttle or intercity rail

8. Essential Travel Tips for Baiyun Airport

  • Confirm your terminal in advance: operations moved to T3 after its launch, so re-check your airline itinerary before you travel.
  • Prepare Chinese addresses: have your destination written in Chinese characters for taxi drivers and local staff.
  • Calculate full journey times: add station walking distances and transfers to train running times.
  • Plan for overnight arrivals: check metro and Gaozeng shuttle closing times if you land late at night.

Baiyun Airport Transport FAQ

Terminal 2 connects directly to Airport North Station on Metro Line 3. Terminal 3 does not have a direct indoor metro link: either take the metro to Gaozeng Station and catch the 15-minute T3 airport shuttle, or ride an intercity train from Terminal 2 (Baiyun Airport North) to Terminal 3 (Baiyun Airport East).

Published schedules list departures from Gaozeng Station between approximately 06:15 and 23:15, and return departures from Terminal 3 between approximately 06:35 and 22:40. Always check the hours before travelling late at night.

In normal traffic, driving to central districts such as Tianhe or Yuexiu takes around 40 to 70 minutes. Heavy rush-hour congestion can make the journey longer.

At Terminal 3, official taxi pickup points are near the arrivals level, including Gates 72 and 75. Always follow official signage and never accept unsolicited rides inside the hall.

Ride-hailing vehicles use dedicated pickup zones, such as designated levels of the P12 parking structure at Terminal 3. Check the exact pickup point in your booking app.

Terminal 3 is served by Baiyun Airport East Station, inside the terminal's transportation centre. It offers intercity rail travel to destinations such as Keyun Road (around 24 minutes) and Guangzhou South.

Yes. Guangzhou Baiyun Airport runs a free 24/7 inter-terminal shuttle bus linking Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Frequency varies with the time of day.

When the metro closes overnight, you can use official taxis, app-based ride-hailing, pre-arranged private transfers or selected late-night airport express coach routes.

Many local drivers and airport staff may not speak English. Having your destination clearly written in Chinese characters prevents misunderstandings and ensures an accurate drop-off.

Private transfers or official taxis are best for heavy luggage, as they offer door-to-door service without station stairs, escalators or crowded metro transfers.
