Travelers arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport during the Songkran holiday were greeted with more than festive smiles they also received an adorable plush companion. In celebration of Thailand’s traditional New Year, airport authorities handed out cuddly dolls of “Moo Deng” a baby pygmy hippopotamus that has recently captured the hearts of the Thai public.

From April 11 to 17, passengers collecting their luggage were delighted to discover the soft, huggable hippo waiting at the carousel as part of a limited-time campaign aimed at spreading cheer during one of the country’s most important holidays. Airport staff distributed the dolls as a gesture of goodwill and as a way to promote Thai culture and hospitality during the bustling Songkran travel period.

The Toddler Hippopotamus: Moo Deng

Moo Deng, whose name translates to “red pork” in Thai, a playful nod to his pinkish skin, was born in 2024 at the Dusit Zoo breeding program and has since become a minor celebrity in Thailand. His fame reached the world afterwards and he gained everyone’s attention on social media. As one of the rare pygmy hippos in captivity, Moo Deng symbolizes both the country’s dedication to wildlife conservation and its fondness for cute, endearing mascots.

The plush doll giveaway not only celebrates Songkran, but also helps raise awareness about the endangered pygmy hippopotamus species. By connecting travelers to Moo Deng’s story, Suvarnabhumi Airport hopes to inspire interest in animal conservation and encourage visits to local zoos and wildlife centers.

The Moo Deng dolls have become an instant hit, with many travelers saying they plan to keep them as souvenirs of their Thai holiday. For some, it's a fun keepsake for others, it’s a reminder of the kindness and creativity that define Thailand’s Songkran spirit.
