Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) is one of the busiest and largest aviation hubs in the world. As a primary gateway into China, it handles tens of millions of international and domestic passengers every year.
Maybe you are on a long layover and want to visit Beijing's cultural landmarks, such as Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City or a section of the Great Wall. Or maybe you simply want to explore the sprawling terminals without heavy bags. Either way, understanding PEK's luggage storage options is essential for a smooth trip. This guide covers where to find left-luggage counters, what they cost, how transit passengers can use them, and practical tips for storing your bags safely.
Overview of Left Luggage Facilities at PEK
Beijing Capital International Airport uses a hybrid storage system: staffed left-luggage counters and automated, password-operated electronic smart lockers in its active terminals. Both are located in the public (landside) areas, so they are easy to reach for arriving passengers, transit travellers who have cleared immigration, and departing guests who arrive early.
The staffed left-luggage desks accept the widest range of items, from standard backpacks and cabin rollers to oversized crates, musical instruments and sports equipment.
Landside Only: What This Means for Transit Passengers
There is no left-luggage counter in the airside international transit area. To store your bags, you need to pass through immigration and enter China, for example with a visa, under the 24-hour direct transit rule or with China's 240-hour visa-free transit if your nationality and route qualify.
Staffed Counter vs. Smart Locker: Which One Should You Use?
Knowing whether you are using a manned desk or a self-service locker changes how drop-off, payment and pickup work.
- Drop-off: Show your passport, fill in a short registration form and hand your bags to an attendant
- Payment: Alipay, WeChat Pay or cash in Chinese yuan
- Pickup: Present your claim tag or digital receipt
- Best for: Large suitcases, oversized items, instruments, sports equipment and multi-day storage
- Drop-off: Choose a locker size on the touchscreen, place your bag inside and close the door
- Payment: Usually by scanning a QR code with Alipay or WeChat Pay; cash is often not accepted
- Pickup: Enter the password or scan the code you received at drop-off; any extra time is charged when you collect
- Best for: Backpacks, cabin bags and medium suitcases for a few hours or a day trip
Terminal-by-Terminal Locations
Left-luggage facilities are spread across both terminal complexes: the western T1/T2 complex and the standalone Terminal 3 to the east. Use the one in the terminal you will depart from, so you do not have to cross between complexes with your bags.
- T1/T2 inter-terminal corridor: in the main walkway connecting Terminal 1 and Terminal 2
- T2 Arrivals: 1st floor (Arrivals Hall), near Door 9
- T2 Departures: 2nd floor, close to Doors 8 and 10
- T3-C (landside): Arrivals Hall level, with counters on both the east and west sides of the public concourse
- Tip: T3-C is where all Terminal 3 check-in takes place, so you can collect your bags and check in on the same visit
Storage Rates, Fees & Pricing Structure
Prices at PEK depend on whether you use a staffed counter or a smart locker. At the staffed counters, fees are charged per piece of luggage for each 24-hour period (or part of one). The price depends on the size, volume and weight category of your item.
Small / Hand Luggage
Under 65 cm
~CNY 20–30Medium Items
65 to 115 cm
~CNY 30Large / Standard Suitcases
115 to 180 cm
~CNY 40Oversized / Special
Over 180 cm or odd shapes
~CNY 50–60+Smart Lockers & Larger Bags Can Cost More
The rates above are typical counter base rates. Automated smart lockers, larger luggage and peak-period pricing can bring the cost up to roughly CNY 50–100 per 24 hours, depending on the exact bag dimensions.
All prices are approximate per item per 24 hours and may change. Confirm the current rate and opening hours at the counter or on the locker screen before you leave your bags.
Payment Note
Staffed counters accept local cash (Chinese yuan), while smart lockers usually work only with mobile payment. In general, Alipay and WeChat Pay are by far the most common payment methods in China. Both apps now let international visitors link a foreign Visa or Mastercard. Set up a digital wallet before you travel, or keep some local currency ready.
Special Perks: Visa-Free Transit Storage Options
International travellers using China's transit policies, such as the 24-hour direct transit exemption or the 240-hour visa-free transit (extended from 144 hours in December 2024), may sometimes benefit from special airport offers. During certain promotional periods or partnership programmes run by the airport, qualifying short-term transit passengers have occasionally been offered free or discounted luggage storage.
These offers are not permanent. After clearing immigration, ask at the airport information desk or the storage counter whether your transit status qualifies for any current storage perks.
Essential Tips for Storing Luggage at PEK
-
Keep your passport handy
Security procedures at Chinese airports are strict, and storage uses real-name registration. You will need to show your passport for identity verification and fill in a short registration form when you drop off your bags.
-
Separate valuables and documents
Never leave high-value electronics, important travel documents, passports, work laptops, fragile items or large amounts of cash in stored luggage. Keep them in your personal daypack or carry-on.
-
Check what cannot be stored
Like most airport left-luggage services, the counters usually refuse flammable or hazardous goods, perishable food, live animals and, in many cases, loose lithium batteries and power banks. Remove these before you drop off your bags.
-
Keep your claim receipt or locker code
At a staffed counter, the attendants will give you a claim tag or digital receipt; at a smart locker, you receive a password or pickup code. Do not lose it, and take a photo of your locker number: you need these to collect your items without delays.
-
Consider luggage wrapping
If you will check your bags onto a later flight, official wrapping stations are located in PEK's departure halls. Plastic-film wrapping, typically costing CNY 10 to 40 depending on size, protects your bags from scuffs, rough handling and weather.
-
Plan your trip back from the city
If you store your bags to visit downtown Beijing, allow for the city's heavy traffic and size. The Capital Airport Express to Dongzhimen (or Sanyuanqiao) is often the fastest, most reliable way to avoid highway congestion and get back to the airport well before your departure. Great Wall sections such as Mutianyu are further out, so plan a full day for them.
