Hundreds of Flights Canceled Amid Winter Storm in Dallas

Disruptions of Flights at DFW and Love Field

Dallas is preparing for a winter storm and more than 950 flights on Thursday have already been cancelled at DFW. Another 200 flights at Dallas Love Field have been disrupted. According to FlightAware, at least 502 flights took off and 458 others landing at DFW were canceled, and approximately 100 flights in Love Field in both directions were canceled.

Most of the cancellations affect passengers of American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Envoy Air. American Airlines has released a travel advisory to customers, which enables them to change their flights in affected areas free of charge.

Airlines come up with reasons to delay or cancel flights so that they can protect the lives of passengers. The public is advised to check on their flight schedule before going to the airport or else they will be locked in.

Procedures Done by Dallas Airport

DFW and Love Field are doing all they can to deal with the aftermath of the storm. At Love Field, spokesperson Patrick Clarke emphasized readiness:

  • Equipment and Supplies:  Readiness in the removal of snow from the runways and taxiways includes snowplow sweepers, 40,400 gallons of de-icer and 166,000 pounds of sand and salt.
  • Staffing: There are some that are sleeping in the location and working through the night in response to the weather issues.

Likewise, DFW Airport teams are ready to apply treatments on the runways, taxiways, and some bridges for safety reasons. They have suggested that passengers should expect to travel longer than usual and ensure they get the latest information on road status.

Weather Forecast and Advice on Traveling

Sleet and rain are predicted to continue throughout Thursday with snow setting in after night fall. The northern areas will get between 3 to 6 inches of snow and in the DFW area, 1 to 3 inches.

It is recommended that the travelers should expect the roads to be wet during the day time and at times icy at night. Airports suggested parking at Love Field and to see if there are parking spots available and update the flight status often through the airline website or app.

American Airlines’ Response

American Airlines is closely monitoring weather conditions and adjusting schedules to ensure safety. A travel alert has been issued, enabling customers to reschedule their flights without penalties. Travelers can contact American Airlines via their website or the reservation hotline for rebooking assistance.

Provisions for Stranded Passengers

In the event of mass cancellations, Love Field is ready to accommodate stranded travelers. Measures include keeping terminal areas open overnight and providing cots, blankets, snacks, and limited concessions.

Nationwide Travel Impact

The storm follows a series of winter weather disruptions across the U.S. Earlier this week, over 1,000 flights were canceled nationwide, with significant delays in Washington and Baltimore. Dallas airports continue to coordinate with the Federal Aviation Administration to ensure safe operations.

Passengers are reminded that airlines, not airports, decide on flight cancellations or delays. Staying updated on flight schedules and weather conditions remains essential during these events.
