Denver International Airport (DEN) has announced a bold plan to shape the future of air travel in the Mile-High City. With passenger numbers rising faster than expected, the airport is preparing to grow well beyond its original design, aiming to serve over 120 million travelers annually by 2045.

Why Expansion Is Urgent
In 2024, DEN handled more than 82 million passengers, despite being originally built for just 50 million. This surge in travel has led airport leaders to act quickly and strategically. Their long-term plan includes major updates to runways, concourses, terminal areas, and access roads, all designed to make travel smoother and more efficient for everyone.
Gate Expansion Across Terminals
As part of the plan, DEN is adding 39 new gates across Concourses A, B, and C. This expansion increases total gate capacity by nearly 30%, allowing more airlines to operate and reducing delays caused by overcrowding. Travelers can expect wider gate areas, better seating, and more space for international flights.
A New Great Hall Experience
The airport’s main terminal, also known as the Great Hall, is undergoing a major transformation. This multi-phase project will create three clear travel zones: one for check-in and security, one for shopping and dining, and one for domestic and international arrivals. The new layout is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce wait times, and provide a more relaxing environment before takeoff.
The full Great Hall renovation is set to finish by 2027 and is already ahead of schedule. Travelers can expect more space, better lighting, and easier navigation throughout the terminal.
Runways and Road Improvements
To support long-term growth, DEN plans to build two new runways, one by 2035 and another by 2045. This will allow more flights to take off and land on time, especially during peak hours and bad weather.
At the same time, Peña Boulevard, the airport’s main access road, will be redesigned to handle the increased traffic. Airport planners are working on solutions that reduce congestion and improve safety, especially during high-travel periods like holidays and ski season.
What Travelers Can Expect
These changes mean faster connections, shorter lines, and a more enjoyable experience from check-in to boarding. Travelers will also find expanded lounge areas, modern dining options, and updated signage to make navigation easier.
Denver Airport is also making space for future innovations, like automated baggage handling, self-service kiosks, and smart gate systems. These upgrades are designed not just for today’s travelers, but for the next generation of air passengers.
Denver’s Global Gateway of the Future
With this 30-year plan in motion, Denver International Airport is positioning itself as one of the top global transit hubs in the United States. Whether you're arriving, departing, or simply passing through, DEN is building for your comfort, speed, and convenience.
The Mile-High City is growing, and its airport is rising to meet the moment.
