New DHL Airfreight Warehouse Opens at Frankfurt Airport

A new state-of-the-art airfreight warehouse operated by DHL Global Forwarding has officially opened in the CargoCity South area of Frankfurt Airport. Developed by Fraport, the facility consolidates DHL's previous three freight locations into a single, modern hub, significantly enhancing operational efficiency.

Features and Capacity

  • The facility spans a total area of 55,000 m², including a 24,500 m² warehouse and 3,000 m² of flexible office and staff spaces.
  • With a processing capacity of 300,000 metric tons per year, the hub marks a major expansion of DHL’s presence at Frankfurt Airport.
  • It features 54 dock doors and truck bays, along with dedicated access roads and maneuvering areas.
  • The parking area includes space for 25 trucks and 185 cars, 20 of which are equipped with EV charging stations.
  • A 2 MW solar energy system is being installed on the roof. The renewable electricity produced will be fed directly into the airport’s power grid.

Strategic and Sustainable Development

As part of Fraport’s CargoHub Masterplan, this facility plays a vital role in increasing the airport’s freight handling capacity by 50%, targeting an annual throughput of nearly 3 million metric tons in the coming years.

The warehouse is also designed with sustainability in mind, aiming to meet both EU Taxonomy compliance for ESG standards and achieve the DGNB Gold Certification from the German Sustainable Building Council.

Despite its scale and complexity, the project was delivered on schedule within approximately one year, reflecting Fraport’s effective project management capabilities.

DHL’s Perspective

By centralizing its operations into this single warehouse, DHL Global Forwarding seeks to reduce operational costs, speed up cargo handling times, and improve overall service delivery. The move supports the company's broader goal to remain agile and responsive in an evolving global logistics landscape.

Strengthening Frankfurt’s Logistics Future

Situated in the heart of Europe, Frankfurt Airport is a key hub in the global supply chain. This new warehouse strengthens its position further by offering cutting-edge infrastructure, reliable connectivity, and environmentally conscious design. It is a forward-looking investment that aligns with both the growth of air cargo demand and the shift toward greener logistics solutions.
