Before You Travel

  • Check in online 24 hours before departure and download your boarding pass.
  • Verify terminal, gate, seat and baggage allowance in your booking or app.
  • Have passport/ID, visas and ESTA (if required) together in an easy-to-reach place.

Arrivals Journey at JFK

International passengers must clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Domestic passengers usually go straight to baggage claim and the arrivals hall, with no passport control.

    Passport check, entry questions and any required documentation review before you officially enter the United States.

  • Baggage Claim

    Check the overhead screens for your carousel number and terminal. Oversized or special items may be delivered to a separate belt.

  • Customs & Ground Transport

    Follow customs officers’ instructions, then exit into the arrivals hall and follow Ground Transportation signs to trains, subways, taxis or cars.

Average timing: Around 30–60 minutes from gate to arrivals hall, depending on queues, time of day and whether you’re clearing immigration.

  • Assistance: If you requested mobility help via your airline, look for PRM/assistance meeting points just after customs.

Departures Journey at JFK

For departures, think in three phases: check-in, security, gate. Time your arrival around those—not just the departure time.

  • Check-in & Bag Drop

    Go to your airline’s desks or bag-drop in the correct terminal. Online check-in and bag tags speed this up considerably.

  • TSA Security

    Follow TSA rules for liquids and electronics. Eligible passengers may use PreCheck, priority lanes or dedicated premium lines.

  • Gate & Boarding

    Re-check your gate on screens and in the app; last-minute changes are common, especially at peak times or during disruption.

Rule of thumb: 2 hours before domestic, 3 hours before international departures—add extra time for holidays, storms or peak travel days.

Connections & AirTrain

Look for Flight Connections and AirTrain signs. The AirTrain runs 24/7 and is free between terminals.

  • Same terminal: Many connections are simply a walk between gates still, verify your new gate on arrival.
  • Different terminals: Use AirTrain; allow buffer time when traveling during morning/evening peaks or bad weather.
  • International → Domestic: Clear CBP, collect bags, re-check luggage and pass TSA again before your next flight, this can be the slowest connection type.

Getting Between JFK and New York City

From the arrivals hall, follow Ground Transportation signs. Your choice depends on time, budget and luggage.

AirTrain + Rail/Subway

AirTrain to Jamaica for LIRR or subway lines, or to Howard Beach for subway into Manhattan and Brooklyn. Best for predictable journey times.

  • Good for solo travelers or light luggage.
  • Contactless and mobile wallets widely accepted.

Taxis, Rideshare & Shuttles

Official yellow taxis offer a flat fare between JFK and Manhattan. Rideshare and private cars use signed pick-up areas; shared shuttles serve many hotels.

  • Comfortable for families, groups and heavy bags.
  • Journey time depends on traffic plan extra in rush hour.

Typical duration: About 35–50 minutes to Midtown by rail; around 45–75 minutes by taxi or car, depending on traffic.
