Gulf Air’s Return to the U.S. Market

The route officially relaunched on Wednesday as part of the airline’s 75th anniversary celebrations. Gulf Air, owned by the Kingdom of Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund, will operate three weekly flights between Bahrain and New York’s Terminal 1 using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

The Dreamliner features 26 Falcon Gold business-class seats and 256 economy seats, providing passengers with a comfortable long-haul experience. In July 2025, Gulf Air finalized an agreement with Boeing to acquire 12 new 787-9 Dreamliners, with an option for six additional aircraft, reinforcing its modern fleet strategy.

Expanding Bahrain’s Global Reach

Located strategically between Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Bahrain aims to position itself as a key regional hub connecting East and West. Gulf Air’s U.S. expansion is expected to boost tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between the two nations.

Attractions such as the Formula One Grand Prix and UNESCO-listed heritage sites are expected to draw American visitors. The airline’s network also provides seamless onward connections from JFK to Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Delhi.

Strategic Partnerships and Future Plans

Gulf Air last operated flights to New York in 1997, when it was part of a broader North American network that included Houston. Years of financial challenges postponed the return until the airline regained profitability and strengthened its operations.

After securing regulatory approvals in April 2025, ticket sales began ahead of a U.S. visit by Bahrain’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister. The carrier has since established codeshare agreements with American Airlines, KLM, and Turkish Airlines, expanding its reach and offering passengers enhanced global connectivity.

If the route performs successfully, Gulf Air plans to further expand into the United States, potentially adding future destinations such as Chicago and Los Angeles.
