John F. Kennedy International Airport is entering one of the most important stages of its $19 billion redevelopment programme, as New York’s primary international gateway prepares to open the first sections of its new terminals while major infrastructure work continues across the airport.

$19 Billion Transformation

The ambitious redevelopment is designed to turn JFK into a modern global aviation hub with new terminals, expanded passenger facilities, improved road access and a future upgrade of the AirTrain system.

$15B+ Private Investment

More than $15 billion of the overall redevelopment is being financed through private investment.

New Terminals

New Terminal One and Terminal 6 will reshape international operations at JFK.

Transport Upgrades

Road access and the AirTrain system are also set for major improvements.

New Terminal One to Transform International Travel

At the centre of the redevelopment is the $9.5 billion New Terminal One, which will become JFK’s largest terminal when fully completed.

$9.5 Billion

The estimated investment behind New Terminal One.

2.4 Million Sq Ft

The terminal will cover approximately 2.4 million square feet.

23 Gates

The completed terminal is expected to feature 23 gates.

First Phase Planned for October 2026

The first phase is scheduled to open in October 2026. Additional sections will follow as development continues, significantly expanding JFK’s capacity for international passengers.

New Terminal One is also being designed around an upgraded passenger experience, with spacious interiors, modern technology, retail and dining areas, lounges and public art forming part of the terminal environment.

$4.2 Billion Terminal 6 Also Taking Shape

On the northern side of JFK, another major part of the redevelopment is progressing at Terminal 6.

Phase One

The first phase, including the main arrivals and departures areas and five new gates, is expected to be completed in 2026.

Phase Two

A second phase scheduled for 2028 will add another five gates, bringing Terminal 6 to a total of 10.

Terminal 6 Built for Wide-Body Operations

Nine of Terminal 6’s 10 gates will be capable of handling wide-body aircraft. The terminal will also connect with JetBlue’s Terminal 5, creating a larger passenger complex on JFK’s north side.

Terminal 6 is being developed with an emphasis on natural light, technology, public art and passenger amenities as JFK seeks to improve the overall experience for international travellers.

Existing Terminals Have Also Been Upgraded

The transformation of JFK extends beyond the construction of two entirely new terminals.

Terminal 4

Terminal 4 has undergone a major expansion that added new gates and passenger facilities while allowing Delta Air Lines to consolidate its operations within a single terminal.

Terminal 8

Terminal 8 has also been redeveloped, with further investment focused on expanding its dining, retail and passenger amenities.

Preparing for Future Passenger Growth

Together, the terminal projects are intended to create a more connected and consistent airport experience while accommodating future passenger growth.

Road Network Being Completely Redesigned

One of the less visible but crucial elements of JFK’s redevelopment is the reconstruction of the airport’s roadway system.

$3.9 Billion Roadway Investment

Approximately $3.9 billion is being invested in a simplified roadway network and supporting infrastructure designed to improve terminal access and reduce the complexity of travelling through JFK by car.

The Port Authority has advised passengers travelling during the construction period to allow additional time and consider public transport where possible.

AirTrain JFK Is Next in Line for Major Upgrade

JFK’s transformation is also expected to extend beyond the terminals and road network.

New Trains and Stations

The Port Authority’s 2026–2035 Capital Plan includes a major AirTrain JFK modernisation with new train cars and upgraded stations.

Capacity Set to Double

Planned improvements are expected to double AirTrain capacity and strengthen public transport connections to the airport.

The upgrade will become increasingly important as the new terminals expand JFK’s international capacity and place additional demand on transport links serving the airport.

A New Passenger Experience for JFK

The scale of the redevelopment reflects a broader effort to change how passengers experience JFK Airport.

Natural Light

More open and welcoming terminal environments.

Dining and Retail

Expanded local dining, retail and lounge experiences.

Art and Technology

Public art and modern technology will play a larger role in the passenger journey.

Major Economic Impact

The redevelopment is also a major economic project for the New York region, supporting thousands of construction jobs and creating opportunities for local businesses and contractors.

With the first new terminal gates set to begin opening in 2026, JFK’s $19 billion transformation is moving from years of construction toward a period when passengers will begin experiencing the results of one of the largest airport redevelopment programmes in the United States.
