Harry Reid International Airport Unveils Expansion and Modernization Plans
Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) of Las Vegas is one of the top ten airports in the United States in terms of traffic intensity. Due to a growing number of travelers and passengers, this airport is set to undergo a massive upgrade. According to the records of the Clark County Department of Aviation, this airport served more than five million passengers monthly in March, May, June, and July of the current year, which established the necessity for expansion.
Tackling Traffic Congestion
This means that the movement of vehicles and people within airport compounds has always challenged most people. One participant, a resident of Las Vegas, Cadden O’Brien, said that traffic was ‘completely insane,’ and Vincent Bellon explained that there was ‘only enough room for car lanes to get around the airport.’ Each resident expressed a similar idea: if the traffic flow could be resolved, the airport experience would be much better.
CCDOA Director Rosemary Vassiliadis mentioned the traffic enhancement aspect of the Harry Reid International Airport Maximization Plan, an overarching plan of maximizing the capabilities of the airport’s existing facilities given its 28-acre landlocked development area in close proximity to the Las Vegas Strip.
“We need to ensure there are enough gates, curbs, and infrastructure to process everyone efficiently,” Vassiliadis said. “Our goal is to create a positive experience that encourages visitors to return.”
Maximization Plan Highlights
The main part of the plan is the construction of a new terminal on the territory of the former Terminal 2, which no longer exists. The terminal is to comprise up to 26 gates, and like the C Gates, the terminal is to use a concourse setup that can accommodate different types of aircraft.
Terminal 3 will also be given the name of Terminal 2 because of the simplification of the terminals’ numbering system. The construction will be in stages in order to reduce the inconvenience, some parts of Terminal 1 will only be demolished after the new terminal has been completed.
Additional upgrades include:
- There are multi-modal transportation facilities at the north and south of the airport for parking of employees, rides, buses and other means of transport.
- A fast access corridor that will address traffic issues and enhance the flow from one terminal to the other.
Vassiliadis said that other components such as a high-T intersection and an overpass bridge will greatly improve traffic movement.
A Vision for the Future
Local authorities of Clark County have shown concern for the implementation of the project, due to the constant customer flow and the relatively early stage of the construction of the Southern Nevada Supplemental Airport in Ivanpah. Commission Chair Tick Segerblom said they wanted the creation of an airport atmosphere akin to the Las Vegas Strip.
“The airport is the first and the last thing a visitor comes across,” Segerblom pointed out. “We want it to look like the city of lights, cameras and lights, and extra touches.”
The design phase of the project will be carried out from January 2025, while the construction phase will follow shortly. The first phases, which would include the renewal of Terminal 1, are expected to be fully developed and functioning in the next four years.
Although there are fundamental changes in the offing, the traveler will probably see some near-term improvements in things like baggage claim areas and the C and D gates are continually being improved.
With such a vision, future air travel in Clark County will be more efficient, organized and symbolic of the Las Vegas spirit.
