Before You Travel

Arrivals Journey at MUC

International passengers must clear German Federal Police (Bundespolizei). Domestic passengers usually go straight to baggage claim and the arrivals hall, with no passport control.

  • Border Control (Non-Schengen only)

    Passport check, entry questions and any required documentation review before you officially enter the Schengen Area/Germany.

  • Baggage Claim

    Check the overhead screens for your carousel number (Gepäckausgabe). Oversized items are delivered to a separate area.

  • Customs & Ground Transport

    Follow customs officers’ instructions, then exit into the public arrivals hall and follow Ground Transportation signs to S-Bahn, bus, or taxi.

Average timing: Around 30–50 minutes from gate to arrivals hall, depending on passport control queues and time of day.

  • Information desks: Located in the arrivals halls of T1 and T2 for local transit and airport information.
  • Assistance: If you requested mobility help (PRM), assistance points are available just after customs/border control.

Departures Journey at MUC

MUC departures follow three key steps: check-in/bag drop, security screening, and gate access (with border control needed for Non-Schengen flights).

  • Check-in & Bag Drop

    Go to your airline's desks in the correct terminal. Utilize self-service kiosks and online check-in for speed.

  • Security Screening

    Clear security (Sicherheitskontrolle). Be prepared to follow EU rules for liquids and remove electronics.

  • Border Control & Gate

    Non-Schengen passengers must clear Bundespolizei border control, then monitor screens for your final gate and boarding time.

Rule of thumb: 2 hours before Schengen/Domestic, 3 hours before Non-Schengen International departures—add extra time during holidays or high-peak periods.

Connections & Terminal Transfers

Look for Transfer signs. Terminals 1 and 2 are linked via the Airport Center (MAC), allowing easy movement, usually on foot.

  • Same terminal: Connections typically require only a walk between gates (may involve going through security again for some arrivals).
  • Different terminals: Use the walk through the MAC, which connects both terminals easily; allow 20–30 minutes for the transfer.
  • Non-Schengen → Schengen: Clear border control, collect bags (if required), and pass through the next security checkpoint before reaching your next gate.

Getting Between MUC and Munich City Centre

From the arrivals hall, follow Ground Transportation signs. Your choice depends on time, budget and luggage.

S-Bahn (Commuter Rail)

Take S1 or S8 lines from the terminal stations directly to Munich Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) and other city points. Best for predictable journey times.

  • Good for solo travelers or light luggage.
  • Tickets (MVV) should be purchased before boarding the train.

Lufthansa Express Bus & Taxis

The Lufthansa Express Bus offers a quick, direct route to the city center. Official taxis and ride-hailing services use signed pick-up areas outside arrivals.

  • Journey time by road depends heavily on traffic; plan extra during rush hour.

Typical duration: About 40–45 minutes to Hauptbahnhof by S-Bahn; around 45–60 minutes by taxi or car, depending on traffic.
