Munich Airport on the Road to Full Recovery

Munich Airport campus overview

Munich Airport is approaching a full recovery from the pandemic-related decline in workforce numbers, according to a newly published economic study conducted by Flughafen München GmbH (FMG). The report shows that nearly 37,000 people were employed across the airport campus by the end of 2024, bringing the airport close to its 2018 peak of around 38,000 employees.

The study was produced in collaboration with Zurich-based econcept AG and the Munich consultancy CIMA, using data from approximately 470 companies and public authorities operating at the airport. Air traffic companies account for around 12,000 jobs, while airport operations provide about 11,000 positions. Public safety and security roles make up just under 5,000 jobs.

Munich Airport also remains an important training hub. Around 700 apprentices and dual-study students began their careers at the airport campus, reinforcing the airport’s role in shaping the future workforce of the region. The study highlights that roughly one quarter of all socially insured jobs in the districts of Erding and Freising are located directly on the airport campus.

The airport’s economic contribution is equally notable. When including indirect and induced effects within Bavaria, Munich Airport generates a gross value added of €7.3 billion. Considering Bavaria’s 2024 GDP of roughly €790 billion, this means that around one in every hundred euros earned in the state is tied to the airport’s activities.

FMG CEO Jost Lammers emphasized that the airport’s significance extends far beyond the secure jobs on-site. The extensive supply chains and service networks connected to airport-based companies make the airport a key engine of economic growth for both the region and the entire state of Bavaria. The study also shows that Munich Airport’s economic impact reaches well beyond regional borders — an estimated 105,000 jobs across Germany depend on the value generated by the airport.
