Qatar Airways’ 7th Australian Gateway
Western Sydney will join Qatar Airways’ existing Australian destinations:
What the New Route Means for Travelers
A Closer Gateway
An alternative for western Sydney residents and businesses who would otherwise travel across the city to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.
Global Connections
Connections through Hamad International Airport to more than 170 destinations, including Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Trade and Cargo
Qatar Airways has highlighted the potential for a direct cargo connection, creating opportunities for exporters to reach the Gulf and beyond.
Supporting Western Sydney International’s Growth
Western Sydney International Airport is designed to operate around the clock, an important feature for long-haul airlines. Qatar Airways’ late-evening arrival and afternoon departure schedule will make use of this flexibility.
The route has also received support through the New South Wales government’s Western Sydney International Take-Off Fund, which aims to attract new international air services and increase visitor numbers as part of wider efforts to strengthen the state’s tourism industry.
What Happens Next?
The next milestone for travelers is the opening of ticket sales on December 19, 2026. The initial three-weekly service is expected to give Qatar Airways time to build demand, with the longer-term goal of daily flights. For the airport, securing a major international airline is an early step in establishing Western Sydney International as a competitive international gateway.
