FCO On Track to Surpass 50 Million Passengers, CEO Confirms Historic Growth
Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) reports exceptional traffic growth through the autumn, building on its recent record-breaking August performance and strengthening its position as Europe’s key Southern gateway.
Rome Fiumicino Airport is ending 2025 on a high note, with passenger volumes confirming the airport's robust recovery and strategic growth. Throughout the autumn, the airport has demonstrated its capability to handle increased traffic efficiently, thanks in part to the recent Terminal 3 enhancements.
The primary goal of the EES is to record the entry and exit of non-EU citizens traveling for short stays (up to 90 days in a 180-day period). This groundbreaking procedure applies to all visitors from outside the European Union, whether they require a visa or not, including citizens from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia.
North American Traffic: The Growth Engine
The strongest catalyst for this performance is the North American market. Traffic between FCO and the US/Canada has soared, demonstrating 40% growth over 2019 levels. This vital intercontinental flow now accounts for approximately 10% of FCO's total passenger volume, reinforcing Rome's status as a premier gateway for transatlantic travelers.
Infrastructure Success Validates 5-Star Status

The efficiency required to handle these record passenger volumes is a direct result of FCO's long-term strategic investments. The modernization of Terminal 3, which added 150 new check-in counters and doubled baggage belt capacity, ensures that FCO can manage increasing volumes without compromising its 5-Star service quality.
This focus on infrastructure and passenger experience has been highly praised. By prioritizing efficient baggage handling and check-in processes, FCO continues to solidify its reputation as one of the world's most passenger-centric major hubs.
"Our focus is above all on the sustainable and high value-added introduction of Artificial Intelligence for new services to our passengers. Fiumicino is a global excellence hub, not just a transit point."
The continuous growth is matched by FCO's commitment to sustainability, with the airport confirming it will exceed the 2% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) usage mandate for 2025. This, coupled with the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for operational efficiency, showcases FCO’s preparation for the future.
With a clear strategy focused on long-haul traffic and premium passenger experience, FCO is confidently building momentum toward an even stronger 2026.
Sustained Excellence Confirmed

The continuous growth, matched by the Skytrax 5-Star rating renewal, ensures FCO continues to strengthen its role as a vital Southern European gateway, confidently managing massive traffic volume while maintaining a world-class passenger experience.
