Project Overview

Singapore Changi Airport has officially broken ground on its much-anticipated Terminal 5 project. This marks one of the largest infrastructure developments in Singapore’s history and aims to future-proof the country’s position as a global aviation hub. The terminal will be built in Changi East and is expected to significantly increase the airport's capacity over the next decade.

A Terminal Designed for the Future

Terminal 5 will be larger than Terminals 1 through 4 combined. It is designed to handle up to 50 million passengers annually in its first phase. With scalability in mind, the terminal is part of a wider Changi East development that includes a third runway, tunnels, and support systems. The estimated cost of the entire project exceeds SGD 10 billion (USD 7.4 billion).

Construction Timeline

Work on the terminal started in 2025, and the first phase is expected to be completed by the mid-2030s. The long timeline reflects the scale and ambition of the project, which includes complex underground systems and advanced digital infrastructure.

Smart and Contactless Technology

  • Biometric facial recognition for seamless check-ins
  • Self-service bag drops and boarding gates
  • Artificial intelligence for crowd management

These technologies are designed to make the travel experience smoother and faster, especially during peak seasons.

Green Architecture

Sustainability is at the core of the design. The terminal will include:

  • Rooftop solar panels
  • Smart energy systems
  • Support for sustainable aviation fuel

These features support Singapore’s goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Boosting Regional Connectivity

With air travel recovering post-pandemic, Terminal 5 is seen as essential for accommodating rising demand. It will enhance Singapore Changi Airport’s ability to connect Southeast Asia with the rest of the world.

Creating Jobs and Opportunities

The project is expected to generate thousands of jobs across construction, engineering, and aviation services. Long-term, it will contribute significantly to Singapore’s economy by increasing tourism and business travel.

What This Means for Travelers

Terminal 5 is not just another airport expansion. It’s a forward-looking investment in comfort, efficiency, and sustainability. Once open, passengers flying through Changi Airport can expect shorter queues, faster connections, and a world-class travel environment built for the future.
