Flight Guide · Taipei, Taiwan
Flying into, out of or through TPE? This page gives you a clear overview of how the airport works: terminals and airlines, live flight status, arrivals and departures flow, transit between terminals and the best ways to reach Taipei City.
Terminals & Key Airlines
TPE operates Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, each serving different international and domestic carriers. T2 is newer and hosts major carriers like EVA Air and China Airlines, serving as a primary hub for connecting traffic.
- Always confirm your terminal and check-in counter via your airline's app or website.
- Inter-terminal moves are via the free Skytrain, which runs 24/7.
- Allow extra time for connections during early morning or late evening peaks.
Live Flight Status
Access real-time flight status on TPE's official screens or through your airline/booking app. Use your app as the primary source for last-minute gate or time changes.
- Landing time & terminal
- Baggage carousel number
- Gate & boarding zone
- Delay & last-call notices
Tip: Turn on notifications for your airline app until you have boarded the aircraft.
Before You Travel
- Check in online 24 hours before departure and download your mobile boarding pass.
- Verify your terminal, gate, seat, and baggage allowance in your booking or app.
- Have passport, visa (if required), and any supporting papers together in an easy-to-reach place.
Arrivals Journey at TPE
All international passengers must clear Taiwan Immigration and Customs. Domestic passengers (rare) proceed directly to baggage claim.
-
Immigration (Passport Control)
Automated e-Gates are available for eligible travelers; manned booths handle all others. Taiwan's process is typically very efficient.
-
Baggage Claim & Customs
Check screens for your carousel. After collecting bags, pass through customs (red for declare, green for nothing to declare).
-
Ground Transport (MRT)
Exit into the arrivals hall and follow signs directly to the Taoyuan Airport MRT station for the fastest transit to Taipei City.
Average timing: Around 25–45 minutes from gate to arrivals hall, thanks to TPE’s optimized flow.
- Information desks: Located just outside customs for tourism help and general inquiries.
- Connectivity: SIM card and Wi-Fi hotspot rental booths are immediately available in the arrivals area.
Departures Journey at TPE
For a smooth departure, allow sufficient time for check-in, security, and the mandatory outbound immigration check before you reach the gate.
-
Check-in & Bag Drop
Locate your airline's counter in T1 or T2. In-Town Check-in (ITCI) is available for some airlines at Taipei Main Station (MRT A1).
-
Security & Immigration
Clear security screening, then pass through the formal outbound Taiwan Immigration (e-Gate or manned booth). Allow time for both steps.
-
Gate & Boarding
Proceed to your gate through the unique cultural-themed airside areas. Re-check screens for any last-minute changes before boarding.
Rule of thumb: 2.5 hours before international departures. Add extra time if using ITCI or traveling during major holidays.
Connections & Skytrain
Follow Flight Connections and Skytrain signs. The Skytrain runs 24/7 and is free for moving between Terminals 1 and 2.
- Same terminal: Connections are usually a straightforward walk between gates.
- Different terminals: Use the Skytrain; allow buffer time when traveling during morning or evening peak waves.
- Transfer Passengers: Follow Transfer/Transit signage and proceed to security/immigration as required for your onward flight.
Getting Between TPE and Taipei City
From the arrivals hall, the Taoyuan Airport MRT is the recommended transport option for speed and reliability.
Taoyuan Airport MRT
The Purple (Express) Line reaches Taipei Main Station (A1) in approximately 35 minutes. Best for predictable journey times.
- Good for solo travelers or light luggage.
- EasyCard or iPass accepted.
Taxis, Buses & Shuttles
Regulated taxis are available at dedicated ranks. Frequent express buses and private shuttles serve key locations across Taipei and Taoyuan.
- Comfortable for families, groups, and heavy bags.
- Journey time depends heavily on traffic conditions.
Typical duration: About 35 minutes to Taipei Main Station by MRT; 45–75 minutes by taxi or car.
Smart Flight Tips at TPE
