  • Sedans, executive cars or vans for groups
  • English-speaking drivers on request
Budget option

Tehran metro

Take Metro Line 1 south towards Kahrizak, change at Shahed station for the airport line and continue to IKA.

How it works

  • The cheapest way to the airport
  • The airport line runs limited daytime hours; check the schedule
  • Avoid Line 1 at rush hour with bulky luggage

Work Back from Your Flight Time

Every stage at IKA takes time

Terminal 1 has several stages between the entrance and the gate. Work back from your departure time so each one has a comfortable buffer.

  • 01

    Leave your hotel

4–5 hours before your flight from central Tehran, earlier from the north or at rush hour.

  • 02

    Entrance screening

IKA screens passengers and bags at the terminal entrance.

  • 03

    Check-in and bag drop

Use your airline's counter; have your passport and booking ready.

  • 04

    Customs and VAT refund

If you are declaring carpets or claiming a VAT refund, do it before checking in your bags.

  • 05

    Passport control and gate

Clear passport control and security, then head to your gate.

Rule of thumb: about 1 hour on the road plus at least 3 hours at the airport means leaving central Tehran 4–5 hours before your flight.

Rush Hours and Night Flights

Timing is everything in Tehran

Evening rush hour

Leaving northern Tehran (Tajrish, Elahiyeh, Vanak) or the centre between about 17:00 and 20:00 needs extra time. Expressways such as Modarres, Navab and Azadegan often slow down heavily.

Late-night and early-morning flights

Many international flights from IKA leave late at night or in the early morning. Roads are usually much clearer then, with the drive from central Tehran taking around 45 minutes.

Cash Tips for the Ride to IKA

Avoid last-minute money problems

Carry exact cash

Drivers rarely have change for large notes, so keep smaller notes for the fare.

Check the unit

Confirm whether a fare is in rials or tomans; 1 toman equals 10 rials.

Spend your rials

Taking Iranian banknotes out of Iran is restricted, so spend or exchange them before you fly.

Transferring from Mehrabad (THR) to IKA

Domestic to international

Mehrabad Airport in western Tehran handles most domestic flights. A taxi or Snapp from Mehrabad to IKA takes roughly 45–60 minutes, usually via the Azadegan expressway. If you are connecting from a domestic flight, leave plenty of time for the cross-city drive and international check-in.

Before You Leave Your Hotel

A quick departure checklist

Documents

  • Passport and boarding pass or booking reference
  • Invoices for carpets, gold or VAT refund goods
  • Any customs declaration from your arrival

Bags and payment

  • No alcohol or restricted items in your luggage
  • Cash for your driver in small notes
  • Your terminal confirmed with your airline

Make Your Departure Easier

A pre-booked private transfer, the CIP fast-track service or a day room at the airport hotel before a late-night flight can take the stress out of leaving Tehran.
