After more than 20 years, Gulf Air has announced the return of its nonstop flights from Bahrain International Airport (BAH) in Muharraq to the United States. Starting in September 2024, the airline will operate direct service to New York John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) three times a week.

This signals an important turning point for Bahrain’s aviation sector and positions Gulf Air as a global player reconnecting the Kingdom directly with the United States for the first time since the early 2000s.

Connecting Again Bahrain and the US

Over two decades ago, Gulf Air discontinued its flights to New York. Now, the airline is relaunching its US presence with an updated service designed to meet modern traveler expectations.

The airline's flagship Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, renowned for its fuel efficiency, quiet cabin, and long-range comfort, will operate the 13-hour transatlantic flight. The aircraft will feature Falcon Gold (business class) and economy cabins, offering both luxury and affordability.

Strategic and Economic Impact

This new route enhances Bahrain’s strategic position in international travel. Gulf Air's return to the US is expected to benefit tourism, business travel, and cargo services, making Bahrain a more accessible destination for North American travelers.

Local tourism authorities believe this development will help boost visitor numbers to the Kingdom. For Bahraini citizens and residents, the route opens up convenient direct access to the US for education, business, and leisure travel.

Flight prices are expected to start around BHD 395 (≈USD 1,050) for a round-trip economy ticket, depending on travel dates and demand.

More Than Just a Flight

According to Gulf Air’s Acting CEO, Captain Waleed Al Alawi, the decision to relaunch the US route is aligned with the airline’s global expansion strategy and Bahrain’s long-term economic vision. He stated that reconnecting with the United States is a “historic and strategic” step that supports bilateral relations and trade.

Strengthening Global Reach

Gulf Airlines is currently exploring the potential expansion of long-haul services to other major cities in North America. Future destinations under review include Chicago, Washington, D.C., and the West Coast, depending on passenger demand and slot availability.
