Barcelona Airport (El Prat) is preparing for one of the most ambitious airport upgrades in Europe. In June 2025, the Generalitat de Catalunya and Spanish airport authority Aena officially approved a massive €3.2 billion ($3.5 billion) expansion plan. Once finished, the airport will be able to handle up to 70 million passengers annually, up from the current 53 million. To address environmental concerns, the expansion plan includes protective measures for nearby ecological zones, especially the sensitive La Ricarda wetlands.
