Beach bag missing? Report it before you walk through the customs doors.
Landing in Cancun without your suitcase can take the shine off the first day of a holiday. The good news: most delayed bags turn up, often on a following flight, and are delivered to your hotel. The key is to report the missing bag correctly, in the right place, before you leave the baggage hall.
This guide explains where to report it at CUN, what to bring, how long recovery usually takes and what you may be able to claim.

Golden rule: report it before the customs doors
At CUN the carousels are inside the secure arrivals area, before Mexican customs. Once you pass the sliding doors into the public hall, you generally cannot go back. If your bag is missing, report it at your airline's baggage desk in the baggage hall first.
Your Baggage Recovery Timeline
Typical stages, not a guarantee
Every case is different, but this is how a delayed bag at Cancun typically progresses from the carousel to your hotel.
01Check every option
Watch your carousel, check the neighbouring belts and look in the oversize area, where golf bags, surfboards, strollers and bulky items are unloaded.
02File your PIR
Go to your airline's baggage service desk inside the baggage hall, complete a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) and get your reference, usually a WorldTracer-style code such as CUNAA12345.
03Tracing begins
The airline searches its system and connecting airports. Many delayed bags travel on the next available flight from your origin.
04Bag arrives at CUN
The bag lands, is cleared through customs under the airline's supervision and is prepared for delivery.
05Delivery to your hotel
Airlines commonly use couriers to deliver bags to hotels in the Hotel Zone, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya.
06Still delayed
Keep receipts for reasonable essentials, such as toiletries, basic clothes and a swimsuit, and follow up using your reference.
07Treated as lost
Under the Montreal Convention, if a bag has not arrived within 21 days you can claim as if it were lost.
Find the Baggage Desk in Your Terminal
CUN has several passenger terminals
Your arrival terminal depends on your airline and route. In every terminal, the airlines' baggage service desks are in the arrivals baggage hall, before customs. Check your boarding pass or airline app to confirm your terminal.

And what to take away with you
Boarding pass and baggage tag stub
The barcode sticker you received at check-in.
Passport and ticket
To confirm your identity.
Your PIR copy
Paper or digital, with your reference code.
A detailed bag description
Colour, brand, hard or soft shell, wheels and any straps, ribbons or tags.
Your delivery address
Hotel name, reservation number, address and a working mobile or WhatsApp number.
Your file reference
Example only. Keep your real reference for tracking, delivery and every claim.
Your Rights and Expense Claims
Montreal Convention and airline policies
For international flights, the Montreal Convention sets the rules on airline liability for delayed, lost and damaged baggage. Domestic Mexican flights may also be covered by Mexican law, and the consumer agency PROFECO can help with complaints.
Essential purchases
If you are away from home, you may be able to claim reasonable costs for toiletries, basic clothing and a swimsuit. Some airlines set daily limits; there is no single amount for every airline.
Keep every receipt
Airlines usually reimburse only against itemised receipts. Submit them through the airline's claim process with your PIR reference.
Lost bags
If a bag has not arrived within 21 days, you can claim for it as lost. Compensation is based on the value of the contents, up to the legal limit.
1,519
SDR
The Montreal Convention baggage liability limit per passenger since December 2024, unless a special declaration was made. Limits are reviewed periodically, and the cash value depends on exchange rates.
Written complaint deadlines
- Delay: within 21 days of receiving the bag
- Damage: within 7 days of receiving the bag
- Check your airline's own claim deadlines too
What If...?
Common situations at CUN
I already walked out past customs
You will usually not be allowed back into the baggage hall. Go to your airline's check-in desk on the departures level or call its customer service to register the missing bag as soon as possible; it may take longer.
My bag arrived damaged
Report the damage at the airline desk in the baggage hall before leaving, take clear photos of the bag, the tag and the damage, and file a damaged baggage report. For international flights, a written complaint is generally due within 7 days.
My surfboard, golf bag or stroller is missing
Check the oversize baggage area near the carousels first; bulky items are often unloaded there rather than on the main belts.
I would rather collect it myself
Delivery to your accommodation is common, but you can ask the airline whether you may collect the bag at the airport instead. Bring your passport and PIR.
Don't Let a Missing Bag Spoil Your Holiday
Stay in the baggage hall, file your PIR at the airline desk, keep your reference and receipts, and give the airline an accurate hotel address and phone number. In most cases, your suitcase will catch up with you, and you can get back to enjoying the Caribbean.
