Cancun Airport is a set of separate terminal buildings, not one connected building. Knowing that is the key to moving around it.

Cancun International Airport (CUN) is Mexico's main beach gateway and one of the busiest airports in Latin America, welcoming millions of passengers each year to Cancun, the Hotel Zone and the wider Riviera Maya. It sits south of downtown Cancun and connects travellers with North America, Latin America and Europe.

This guide covers how the terminals are laid out, how to move between them, what to expect when connecting between flights, and practical tips for a smooth journey.

Quick answer

The terminals are separate buildings with no airside connection between them. To change terminals, you leave the terminal to the public (landside) area and use the free inter-terminal shuttle. Terminals 2 and 3 are close enough to walk between, while Terminal 4 is farther away. Allow extra time when your connection involves a terminal change.

Understanding the Layout of Cancun Airport

Why CUN works differently from single-terminal airports

Cancun Airport's terminals are lined up along the airport access road as individual buildings, each handling its own mix of domestic and international flights. They are not joined under one roof, and there is no airside corridor or train linking them.

For most travellers who arrive and leave from the same terminal, this makes little difference. It matters most when you connect between flights in different terminals, when your outbound flight leaves from a different terminal than your arrival, or when you need a service, such as a particular lounge, in another building.

Separate buildings

Each terminal has its own check-in, security, gates and arrivals area.

No airside link

You cannot walk between terminals after security; you must exit to the public area.

Free shuttle

A complimentary shuttle connects the terminal buildings on the landside.

Immigration on arrival

International arrivals clear immigration and customs in their arrival terminal.

Cancun Airport Terminals and Airlines

Before you travel, check which terminal your flight uses on your ticket, booking confirmation or airline app. Terminal assignments are made by the airport and airlines and can change, so do not rely on general lists or past trips.

Terminal 1

Limited use

Terminal 1 does not play a major role for most scheduled passengers. If your booking shows Terminal 1, check the details with your airline or operator.

Good to know

  • Confirm your terminal with your airline
  • Allow extra time if you need to reach another terminal
T2

Terminal 2

Domestic and some international flights

Terminal 2 handles many domestic flights, including Mexican low-cost carriers, as well as some international routes, for example to Latin America. It is next to Terminal 3, and you can walk between them.

Good to know

  • Walkable from Terminal 3
  • Domestic and international areas
  • Check your airline's check-in zone on screens

Getting Between Terminals at Cancun Airport

Shuttle, walking and ground transport

Free inter-terminal shuttle

The main way to move between Terminals 2, 3 and 4. Shuttles leave from marked stops outside the terminals, usually near the arrivals exits. Journey times are short but depend on traffic and which terminal you are going to.

  • Free of charge; never pay anyone for a "shuttle ticket"
  • Follow the shuttle signs or ask information staff
  • Keep your boarding pass or booking handy
  • Allow time for waiting as well as the ride

Walking T2–T3

Terminals 2 and 3 are close together, and you can walk between them along an outdoor path in a few minutes. In the heat or with heavy bags, the shuttle may be more comfortable.

Ground transport

ADO buses connect the terminals with downtown Cancun and other destinations in the Riviera Maya, such as Playa del Carmen. Taxis, pre-booked transfers and rental car shuttles pick up from marked zones outside the arrivals halls.

In the arrivals hall, you may be approached by people offering transport or tours. Head to the official transport desks or your pre-booked provider's meeting point.

How to Transfer Between Terminals: Step by Step

For international arrivals connecting in another terminal

The exact process depends on your tickets, airlines and whether your bags are checked through. For an international arrival connecting to a flight in another terminal, it usually looks like this:

  • 01

    Deplane and clear immigration

Follow the signs to passport control. Eligible travellers may be able to use automated e-gates where available.

  • 02

    Collect bags and clear customs

Pick up your checked luggage and pass through customs, including the random "traffic light" inspection.

  • 03

    Exit and take the shuttle

Leave to the public area, follow the inter-terminal shuttle signs and board the free shuttle to your next terminal, or walk if you are going between Terminals 2 and 3.

  • 04

    Check in and clear security

Go to your airline's check-in counter, drop your bags and pass through security to your departure gate.

Separate tickets? your bags will not be transferred automatically, and you must check in again with your next airline before its check-in deadline.

Connection Times and Requirements

Pick your connection type

Usually the simplest connection, especially within the same terminal. Follow your airline's instructions; if your flights are in different terminals, you will need to change buildings and clear security again.

  • No immigration
  • Follow your airline's transfer instructions
  • Check if you must change terminal

Suggested planning buffer

Plan generously; at least 1 hour in the same terminal

You must clear immigration and customs and usually collect and re-check your bags. If your next flight is in another terminal, add the shuttle and a new security check.

  • Immigration and customs
  • Collect and re-check bags
  • Shuttle and security if changing terminal

Suggested planning buffer

Plan around 2 hours or more

When changing terminals, expect passport control, collecting and re-checking bags, the shuttle and new security screening.

  • Passport control
  • Bag re-check
  • Shuttle and security screening

Suggested planning buffer

Plan around 2 hours or more

These are planning suggestions, not official rules. Your airline sets the minimum connection time for your booking. On separate tickets, or at busy times, allow even more.

At the airport

  • Follow official signs, not offers in the arrivals hall
