CUN smoking & vaping guide

Smoking at Cancun Airport? Plan your last cigarette before security.

Mexico has some of the strictest anti-smoking rules in the Americas. At Cancun International Airport (CUN), smoking is not allowed inside the terminals or after security, and bringing vapes into Mexico is prohibited. Here is where you can smoke in each terminal, what to avoid and how to plan a layover.

Outside · Landside

Designated outdoor areas only, where signposted

Inside · Airside

No smoking or vaping in terminals, gates or lounges

Mexico's Smoking Law at a Glance

Why the rules at CUN are so strict

Smoking at Cancun International Airport is governed by Mexico's federal tobacco control law (Ley General para el Control del Tabaco) and its regulations. Mexico prohibits smoking in enclosed public spaces, and its rules, strengthened in recent years, also restrict smoking in many busy outdoor public areas.

At the airport, this means you can only smoke in designated outdoor areas outside the terminal buildings, before security. Inside the terminals and after security, smoking and vaping are not allowed.

Indoors: banned

No smoking anywhere inside the terminal buildings, including restrooms and stairwells.

Airside: banned

No smoking rooms or booths after security, at the gates or in the lounges.

Outdoors: designated areas

Smoke in the marked outdoor areas outside the terminals, away from doors and queues.

The Key Rule: Landside, Outdoors Only

Smoke before you go through security

Every terminal at Cancun Airport follows the same simple rule: you can smoke outside the building, in the designated areas on the landside, but not inside or after security. Plan your last cigarette before you join the security queue.

Zone A

Outside the terminal (landside)

  • Designated smoking areas are outdoors, near the terminal entrances and exits, marked by signs and ash bins
  • Keep a few metres away from doors, queues and bus and taxi lines
  • Dispose of cigarette ends in the bins provided
Zone B

Inside and after security (airside)

  • No smoking rooms or booths after security
  • No smoking or vaping at gates, in duty-free or in lounges
  • Going back outside to smoke means clearing security again
Re-entry warning: leaving the airside area to smoke means going through security screening again, and passport control if you are connecting internationally. Queues can be long at busy times, so only do it if you have plenty of time.

Critical Warning: Vapes and E-Cigarettes in Mexico

Leave them at home

Mexico prohibits the import of electronic cigarettes, vaping devices, pods and e-liquids, and also restricts heated tobacco devices. The rules apply to travellers, including devices carried for personal use.

Customs officers at Cancun Airport can confiscate these products, and you may face penalties or further questioning. Saying a device is for personal use or nicotine-free is unlikely to help. The simplest approach: do not pack vapes or e-cigarettes for a trip to Mexico, and never vape inside the terminals.

Advice for Layovers and Connections

Pick your layover length

Stay airside

  • Remain inside the departure area rather than going out to smoke.
  • Leaving means security again, and immigration if you are connecting internationally; you risk missing your flight.
  • Use nicotine gum or patches to get through the wait.
Tip: A Cancun Airport lounge is smoke-free but a calmer place to pass the time.

Possible, with planning

  • If you are allowed to enter Mexico, clear immigration and customs and head to the outdoor smoking area outside your terminal.
  • Come back with at least 90–120 minutes before boarding to clear security, and passport control if needed, again.
  • If you must re-check bags, check your airline's check-in deadline.
Tip: Busy periods can mean long queues, so give yourself a generous margin.

A smoker's departure plan

1

Before check-in

Have a cigarette in the outdoor area outside your terminal.

Smoker Etiquette at the Airport

Small courtesies that make a difference

Mind the queues

Stand away from taxi, shuttle and bus lines so smoke does not drift over waiting passengers.

Families nearby

Move a little further away if children are waiting near the doors.

Use the bins

Put cigarette ends in the ash bins, not on the pavement or in planters.

Freshen up

A mint or quick hand wash before boarding is appreciated by your seat neighbours.

Lighters, Matches and Tobacco in Your Luggage

What you can pack

Item General rule
Lighters One small lighter, carried on your person; not in checked bags
Matches One small box of safety matches, carried on your person
Torch or jet lighters Not permitted
Cigarettes Within customs allowances when entering Mexico
Nicotine gum or patches Fine in hand luggage
Airline rules: your airline may apply its own limits on lighters and matches, so check them if you are unsure.

Managing Nicotine Cravings on Your Journey

Getting through a long, smoke-free trip

Between the drive to the airport, check-in, security, waiting at the gate and the flight itself, you may go many hours without smoking. A little planning makes it easier.

Time your last cigarette

Have it outside, just before you go through security, so the wait afterwards is as short as possible.

Nicotine replacement

Nicotine gum, lozenges or patches can help on long journeys.

Stay hydrated

Drinking water and having a snack can help take the edge off cravings.

Keep moving

A walk around the departure area helps pass the time while you wait to board.

Find a calm spot

A quieter seat, or a lounge, makes a smoke-free wait easier.

No smoking on board

Smoking and vaping are banned on flights, including in the restrooms, where smoke detectors are fitted.
