Pickup at the airport and transportation to the Pera neighborhood. The Beyoglu district was known by the old name Pera, which was in use up until the middle of the 20th century. Pera, which in Greek means "across" or "another side," was a term used during the Byzantine Period to refer to the opposite side of the Golden Horn.
We will begin our journey by strolling down Istiklal Street, one of Istanbul's busiest pedestrian streets in the Pera neighborhood. It is 1,6 kilometers long and lined with a variety of cafes, patisserie shops, theaters, shopping malls, and restaurants. The French Cultural Institute, which provides French culture to Istiklal Street, or "Grande Rue de Pera" as it was known a century ago, is our first visit.
Hagia Triada Eastern Orthodox Church, which means "Holy Trinity" and is the biggest Greek Orthodox church in Istanbul, is the next stop. We then go to the Aga Camii Mosque, which was built in 1868. The oldest high school in the Ottoman Empire, Galatasaray High School, is the next stop on our tour. Galata Saray Enderun-u Hümayunu, which translates as Galata Palace Imperial School, was built in 1481. We then go to CiCek Pasaji, which was formerly one of the Ottoman Empire's first theaters but is now a tunnel.
From French Street, a charming French-style street lined with brasseries and cafes, we descend. The Church of Saint Antoine, Istanbul's largest Roman Catholic church, will be our next trip. Our next trip is the Crimea Memorial Church, which Sultan Abdulmecit built between 1858 and 1868 in memory of the British soldiers who fought in the Crimean War on the Ottoman and French sides.
From there, we head to Istanbul's oldest European hotel, the Pera Palace Hotel, a museum hotel that was constructed to house a passenger on the fabled Orient Express. After that, we'll take a journey on "The Tunnel," the second-oldest underground urban rail system in the world. At the conclusion of the tour, proceed back to the airport.
