The oldest church of the eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine) is the Hagia Irene, which is situated in the outer courtyard of Topkap Palace. Additionally, it was Istanbul's second-largest church after Hagia Sophia. In 330 Sultan Tombs, Hagia Irene—a Byzantine building typical of the period in terms of materials and architecture—was erected on the site of an ancient temple. Hagia Sophia's cemetery contains five Ottoman Sultan tombs.
The ceramic panels, which feature purple, red, green, and blue floral motifs, are among the most exquisite examples from the 16th century. On the sarcophagi, there are displays of princely robes and a small fragment of the Kaaba covers.
