As of January 1, 2026, the Georgian government has officially implemented a mandatory health and accident insurance requirement for all foreign visitors entering the country. This new regulation, part of the updated "Law on Tourism," applies to every traveler, including those from 95+ visa-free countries like Turkey and EU nations.
Border authorities at Tbilisi Airport and land crossings now require proof of a policy with a minimum coverage of 30,000 GEL (approx. $11,000), which must be presented in either English or Georgian. The insurance must cover the entire duration of the stay, including the specific dates of arrival and departure, and can be presented in digital or physical format.
Travelers who fail to provide a valid policy at the border risk being denied entry or facing a 300 GEL fine. While policies can be purchased at the border, authorities strongly recommend securing insurance in advance to avoid delays. This measure aims to protect tourists from high medical costs and ensure the long-term sustainability of Georgia’s healthcare system amidst booming tourism numbers.
