Hagia Sophia, or Ayasofya in Turkish, stands as one of the most breathtaking landmarks in the world. Located in the heart of Istanbul’s historic peninsula, this magnificent structure bridges Christianity and Islam, Byzantium and the Ottoman Empire, history and architecture. With over 1,500 years of cultural legacy, Hagia Sophia promises an unforgettable journey through time.

A Journey Through History

Commissioned by Emperor Justinian I, Hagia Sophia was built between 532 and 537 AD as a grand cathedral for the Byzantine Empire. It held the title of the world’s largest church for nearly a millennium and stood as the heart of Orthodox Christianity.

Following the Ottoman conquest in 1453, Sultan Mehmed II converted Hagia Sophia into a mosque, preserving its grandeur while adding minarets, a mihrab, and Islamic calligraphy. It remained a mosque until 1935, when it was turned into a museum by the Republic of Turkey.

In 2020, Hagia Sophia was officially reopened as a mosque. Today, it serves both as a place of worship and a cultural monument open to visitors from around the world.

What to See Inside

The Dome
The vast dome; 31 meters in diameter and 56 meters high, appears to float on light due to 40 surrounding windows. This engineering marvel is one of the most celebrated in the ancient world.

Byzantine Mosaics
Hidden for centuries under plaster, many original Christian mosaics have been carefully restored and are now visible again:

  • The Virgin Mary with Christ Child in the apse
  • The powerful Deesis Mosaic (Christ flanked by Mary and John the Baptist)
  • Imperial portraits of Empress Zoe and Emperor Constantine IX
  • Ottoman Additions
  • Mihrab and Minbar: Used for Islamic prayer and sermons
  • Giant calligraphic medallions: Featuring names of Allah, the Prophet, and the caliphs
  • Four towering minarets: Visible from across the city skyline

Upper Gallery
Don’t miss the Upper Gallery, once reserved for the imperial family. The view of the nave, dome, and mosaics from above is breathtaking; and perfect for photos.
