A Walk Through History
Commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II (Mehmed the Conqueror), construction of Topkapı Palace began in 1460 and was completed by 1478. For centuries, it was the seat of government and the private residence of the ruling family.
At its peak, the palace housed more than 4,000 people, including sultans, concubines, eunuchs, soldiers, and administrators. Though the Ottoman court moved to Dolmabahçe Palace in the 19th century, Topkapı remained a powerful symbol of imperial authority.
In 1924, following the foundation of the Republic of Turkey, the palace was transformed into a museum. Today, it showcases an extraordinary collection of treasures, religious relics, weapons, manuscripts, and garments.
