On June 29, 2025, Air India’s Flight AI357, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport to New Delhi, was diverted to Kolkata as a precautionary measure due to persistent warm temperature in the cabin.
Safe Landing and Immediate Checks
The aircraft landed safely in Kolkata and is currently undergoing technical inspections to identify and resolve the issue. Passengers disembarked without incident, and Air India assured that all necessary support was being provided on the ground.
Support and Alternative Arrangements
Air India confirmed that ground staff in Kolkata were assisting passengers by offering refreshments and arranging alternative flights to New Delhi at the earliest opportunity. The airline also expressed regret for the inconvenience caused.
Recent Operational Concerns
This incident followed a series of recent operational issues for Air India. Just two days earlier, on June 27, Flight AI639 from Mumbai to Chennai returned to Mumbai shortly after takeoff due to a burning smell in the cabin. These events also come in the shadow of the tragic Air India Flight AI-171 crash near Ahmedabad on June 12, which claimed 241 lives and prompted intensified aviation safety scrutiny.
