Istanbul Overtakes Heathrow as Europe's Busiest Airport — And the Timing Matters

Europe's aviation map shifted in July 2026. Istanbul Airport handled 8.15 million passengers, moving ahead of London's Heathrow Airport, which recorded around 7.9 million passengers. The result made Istanbul Europe's busiest airport by monthly passenger traffic and renewed questions about Heathrow's capacity and expansion plans.

The difference was around 250,000 passengers. While that gap is relatively small, the timing is significant. Heathrow has been one of Europe's leading airports for decades, while Istanbul Airport opened less than eight years ago.

Istanbul Airport Takes the Lead

Istanbul Airport's passenger traffic increased 2.3% year over year in July. Heathrow, meanwhile, recorded a 1.5% decline.

The figures should be viewed in the right context. This is a monthly ranking, not the final annual ranking for 2026. Istanbul has not yet been confirmed as Europe's busiest airport for the full year.

Still, other aviation data also shows the strength of Istanbul's current position.

OAG's July figures put Istanbul first in Europe for scheduled seat capacity, with 4.69 million seats compared with Heathrow's 4.49 million. Eurocontrol data also showed Istanbul averaging 1,623 daily flights between July 13 and 19, compared with 1,331 at Heathrow.

Passenger numbers, scheduled seats and flight frequency all point to Istanbul's growing role as a major European aviation hub.

Why Heathrow Fell Behind

Heathrow's July results were affected partly by weaker traffic on Middle East routes. Passenger numbers on those routes fell 20.2% year over year, amid disruption linked to the conflict in the region.

That helped widen the difference between the two airports in July. Istanbul's passenger numbers continued to grow, while Heathrow recorded a decline.

However, the result does not mean Heathrow has suddenly lost its importance. The London airport remains one of the world's major international hubs and handled approximately 84.5 million passengers in 2025.

The more important issue is capacity.

Heathrow Pushes for a Third Runway

Heathrow has used the latest figures to reinforce its argument for expansion.

The airport said the case for expansion has become clearer after Istanbul overtook Heathrow as Europe's busiest hub. The central part of the plan is a third runway, which Heathrow says is needed to increase capacity and maintain the UK's position in global aviation.

The UK government opened a new public consultation on Heathrow expansion in June 2026. The current process could lead to a final planning decision around 2029, with the third runway targeted for operation later in the following decade.

The proposed expansion could eventually increase Heathrow's annual capacity to around 150 million passengers.

Istanbul Has More Room to Grow

Istanbul Airport faces a very different capacity situation.

The airport already operates three independent runways, and a fourth runway is planned as part of its continued expansion. İGA has also been working to increase terminal capacity from 90 million to 120 million passengers annually.

That gives Istanbul significant room to handle future passenger growth.

The contrast is striking: Heathrow is trying to add a third runway to an established airport surrounded by a densely developed urban area, while Istanbul Airport was built as a new international hub with long-term expansion in mind.

İGA CEO Selahattin Bilgen had also predicted this change before it happened. In December 2025, he said Istanbul could overtake Heathrow in passenger numbers during 2026.

Seven months later, Istanbul has achieved that milestone on a monthly basis.

What Happens Next?

The July figures do not settle the annual European airport ranking. Heathrow could still regain the monthly lead, and the full-year results will not be known until 2026 ends.

But the latest numbers highlight a wider change in European aviation.

Istanbul Airport is expanding while Heathrow is fighting to increase capacity. Istanbul's geographic position between Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa also continues to strengthen its role as a global transfer hub.

For July 2026, at least, the result is clear: Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow and become Europe's busiest airport by monthly passenger traffic.
