A Perfect Trip With Your Small Friend
Planning a trip with your pet? Discover how to turn a stressful journey into a cherished memory with our complete guide to pet travel.
Having a pet brings joy to the entire family. They are not just animals; they are close family members. However, problems often arise when planning a trip. Leaving them behind causes worry and guilt—no one likes the feeling of "giving up" on pet care, even for a few days.
But why leave them behind? You can take your beloved pet on a trip with you! Before you go, here is everything you need to know.
Mode of Travel: Flying
Traveling with a pet is very different from traveling alone. If you are choosing air travel, major carriers like Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Delta, American Airlines, and Air Canada generally welcome pets.
Only small dogs and cats are typically allowed in the cabin. Larger pets travel in the cargo hold. Don't worry—cargo is often quieter and darker, allowing pets to rest better during the flight.
Key Flight Conditions
Health Status
Sick or pregnant pets are generally not allowed to fly.
Age Limit
Pets must be at least 8 weeks old (older for some international routes).
Weight Limit
Max 8kg (inc. cage) for Cabin (PETC). Heavier pets go to Cargo (AVIH).

Tips for a Comfortable Journey
- Choose the Right Carrier: Ensure it's big enough for your pet to stand and turn around.
- Direct Flights: Avoid layovers whenever possible to reduce stress.
- Exercise: Go for a long walk before heading to the airport.
- Timing: If traveling Cargo, check in early. If Cabin, arrive as late as safely possible to minimize crate time.
Visit the Vet
Always consult your veterinarian before a trip. Ensure you have the destination's entry requirements:
- Recent Blood Tests
- Up-to-date Vaccinations
- Microchip Identification
The Pet Bag
Pack a separate bag for your pet so essentials are easily accessible.
- Ready-made Food (Don't rely on finding their brand abroad)
- Medications
- Favorite bedding/toy for comfort
Road Trips & Hotels
By Car
Use a special pet seat belt or secure crate. Do not let them roam free while driving. Stop frequently for walks, and crack the window for fresh air.
Pet-Friendly Hotels
Not all hotels accept pets. Book in advance and request a ground floor room near an exit for easy bathroom breaks. Bring their own bedding to help them adjust.
